Congress, District 1 - Jim Harlan. In this district, voters are presented with two candidates who share some conservative views yet differ significantly in their experiences and approaches to problem solving. Both five-month incumbent Steve Scalise and retired businessman Jim Harlan are pro-life, pro-gun and pro-drilling. On other fronts, however, we feel that Harlan best matches the temperament of the district: conservative, but not didactically right wing.
U.S. Congress
Telling the differences between Jim Harlan and Steve Scalise would take
more space than this newspaper has to offer, in spite of the fact they
are both pro-gun, pro-life, conservative Southern males. The difference
is that Jim Harlan has the education and the national experience
necessary to do the best job for the 1^st Congressional District.
Scalise is a lightweight.
Harlan has written meaningful legislation as an energy expert in both
the Carter and Reagan administrations, specializing in exactly how to
From their educational background to where they live, from work experience to political affiliation, two very different candidates are seeking the 1st Congressional District seat on Nov. 4.
Jim Harlan still has considerable ground to make up, but already he's made history. He's the only Democrat in 30 years to mount a credible campaign in Louisiana's 1st Congressional District.
We certainly didn't see this one coming, and not just because Harlan until two months ago was a political cipher.
Democrat Jim Harlan's campaign to unseat U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, has moved up a notch on the priority list of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
The DCCC has named Democratic contender Jim Harlan to their Red to Blue list with 21 days left in the election! The DCCC Chairman, Rep. Van Hollen, (D-MD) had this to say about Jim's campaign:"Jim Harlan is running a powerful campaign and is committed to fighting for the critical needs of the people in his district such as hurricane protection and better energy policies. With less than 21 days to make his case for change to voters, the Red to Blue program will give Jim Harlan the financial and structural edge to be even more competitive in November." Folks ... if you live in LA-01, this is it. Less than 21 days before the election. If you wanna party hearty the night of November 4th, then you've got to leave it all on the field. That means, if you've got some spare change, donate! If you've got some time to spare, volunteer! Talk to your neighbors. Talk to your friends. Talk to your co-workers. Tell them that this is literally the best chance y'all have in LA-01 to elect a Representative that will fight for y'all, rather than use it to springboard to another elective office. |

Oct. 12, 2008 --- U.S. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, and Democratic challenger Jim Harlan of Lacombe engaged in a spirited face-off for broadcast this morning, taking a contentious tone as the 1st Congressional District campaign comes into focus.
Here's a sampling of few Saints community member comments...
"I just saw this campaign commercial for Steve Scalise. I guess he wanted to add fuel to the fire of the McCain campaign. Thanks Steve. I voted for you last time. I won't again." -- DocterJ, Veteran, Hammond via Uptown, 54
"Scalise is terrible. I never have and never will vote for that guy. Smarmy. Career politician. Liar." -- TPS, 44
From Oct. 7, 2008 article by Sheila Grissett...
Cheney's visit comes as Scalise girds for a general election campaign against Democrat Jim Harlan of Lacombe, who has largely self-financed an aggressive effort to unseat the rookie congressman. Harlan, a venture capitalist with expertise in the energy industry, has plowed $750,000 of his own money into his campaign. As of Sept. 14, the last time candidates were required to file reports with the Federal Election Commission, Scalise had $292,987 in his political treasury.
